How do 2.3 million organisms relate to one another? Now, thanks to a multi-institution team we have a first draft for THE Tree of LIfe. Amongst many challenges, the herculean effort involved collating thousands of trees published in the literature, winnowing those down to 484 trees, and then using those to generate the BIG tree.
